Hypertension, or high blood pressure, can put you at risk for stroke, heart attack, kidney disease, and other major health issues. The American Heart Association calls hypertension a “silent killer” because it’s largely symptomless.
Headaches, dizziness, nervousness, sweating, difficulty sleeping, or facial flushing aren't symptoms of high blood pressure – that’s a common myth. You can’t assume you’re fine because you don’t have any signs of hypertension, and you don’t want to take a chance with your health or your life. The only way to know if you have this condition is to get your blood pressure checked.
As many as 75 million U.S. adults have hypertension. It’s one of the most common conditions among TRS-Care Standard participants.
“Normal” blood pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg. If your blood pressure measures higher, your Primary Care Provider may prescribe medication or lifestyle changes to help lower your risk.
