Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is negotiating new contracts with Shannon Medical Center. The current contracts were expected to expire May 17, 2025. However, SMC and BCBSTX extended the date until May, 23 2025, to allow time to finalize new agreements. This affects many plans at BCBSTX, not just TRS-ActiveCare.
We have a long and positive relationship with Shannon Medical Center, but participants are our priority. We want to reach an agreement that will continue to give them access to Shannon Medical Center hospitals at fair prices.
If BCBSTX and Shannon don’t sign new contracts before May 23, 2025, Shannon hospitals won’t be in network for health plans at BCBSTX, including TRS-ActiveCare.

This may impact participants if Shannon goes out of network. BCBSTX can help make their move to other hospitals as seamless as possible if they need new care options on or after May 23, 2025:
Participants can always use Provider Finder to find in-network hospitals and facilities in BCBSTX’s robust network. They can also call a Personal Health Guide at 1-866-355-5999 anytime to find new doctors or for help with their plan.
In the case of a life-threatening illness or injury, participants should call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room right away. Emergency services are always covered at the in-network benefit level.
