How to get care:
There are many types of mental health providers that offer a range of mental health care. You can decide what plan is best for you:
- You could start by talking about mental health with your primary care provider (PCP). Your PCP may help you find mental health support nearby, suggest a mental health provider or prescribe medication.
- Counselors, therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists all may offer mental health care, but only psychiatrists or mental health nurse practitioners can prescribe medication. That’s one of the reasons why talking to a PCP first can be helpful—some people may want to work with more than one provider to come up with the best course of action.
