Find a Doctor or Hospital

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas STAR Kids Plan has many network providers in the Central and Travis service areas. You have a wide choice of primary care providers (PCPs), specialists, hospitals and pharmacies. Learn more about providers in the sections below.

  • In-Network and Out-of-Network Providers

    You should use in-network providers. These providers are contracted with BCBSTX to provide medical care to members. You do not need a referral to go to providers in our network.

    If you prefer to go to a Medicaid doctor who is not part of our network, you will need to work with a service coordinator. They can help you get approval to go to your out-of-network provider. 

    Our network continues to grow. If you do not find a provider you are looking for, call the BCBSTX Customer Advocate Department toll-free at 1-877-688-1811 (TTY: 711).

    Keep in mind that you may need to get approval for some services before you are treated. This is called "preauthorization." BCBSTX may not cover the service if you don't get approval. You do not need an authorization for:

    • Emergency care
    • Medically necessary service from an in-network provider

     

  • Choosing a PCP

    Please choose a PCP from the provider network when you join. Do you currently have and want to keep an out-of-network PCP or a PCP from a non-Medicaid plan your child may be on? We can help you do that. Please call Service Coordination. We will need all the information on your child's out-of-network PCP or the non-Medicaid plan that you want to use. We will then get you a new ID card that shows "Commercial PCP" or “Dual Eligible” for members that have Medicare. If you would like your child's specialist as their PCP, we can help with that. Work with your service coordinator to assign a PCP for your child.

  • Counseling Referrals

    To find out if BCBSTX covers counseling referral services based on moral or religious objections, you should call the Customer Advocate Department. If you disagree with the outcome, you can file an appeal. Check Complaints and Appeals to learn more. For questions, please call us at 1-877-688-1811 (TTY: 711).

With our secure member portal, Blue Access for MembersSM (BAMSM), you can manage your health plan from your computer or smartphone. You can search for a doctor, as well as choose or change your PCP.
