NPI: How to Use your NPI Number

Use it wisely!

As of May 23, 2008, all electronic transactions (such as electronic claims, benefits and eligibility inquiries, etc.) must include only your NPI as the single provider identification number, per the federal regulation. Claims and other standard transactions including any other provider identifiers (such as the BCBSTX provider number or UPIN) can no longer be accepted.

For additional information regarding how to use your Type 1 (Individual) and/or Type 2 (Organizational) NPI(s), refer to the FAQs.

NOTE: Your Federal Taxpayer Identification Number will continue to be required on all claims for tax reporting purposes. The NPI does not replace your TIN.
