Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas Promotes Healthy Workplace Habits
National Initiative on April 25, Encourages Workers to Turn a Working Lunch into a Walking Lunch
Richardson, TX — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) will help its employees step into a healthier lifestyle by participating in National Walk @ Lunch Day® on April 25, 2012. From 9am – 1:00 pm, Blue Cross employees will begin their walk around a nature trail adjacent to its campus and will also be eligible to enjoy prize drawings and giveaway items. The sixth annual walk is part of a growing national workplace fitness effort created in response to recent studies that show Americans do not have time during their day to exercise.
National Walk @ Lunch Day is a national workplace walking program designed to encourage employees to walk during their lunch break. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas employees are making the commitment to walk to better health, reducing their likelihood of costly future health problems. Research shows that a regular walking program can help control weight, condition the heart and lungs, and prevent the onset of health problems. Walking can help those with chronic illnesses better manage their health. BCBSTX is one of many health-conscious companies across America encouraging employees to take steps to better health. BCBSTX was an early supporter of this important national effort, which benefits their employees and the communities where they live and work.
"The great thing about walking," says Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, vice president and chief medical officer at BCBSTX, "is that it's easy, can be done almost anywhere, requires no equipment, can make you healthier and it doesn’t cost a thing. I would suggest, however, that anyone who starts walking for the mental and physical benefits should make sure they are wearing the right shoes to make walking easy and safe for your feet."
Many experts say that 10,000 steps a day does a body good, however, the key is to keep increasing the amount of walking you do overall and keep working to increase the number of steps you walk daily. A good walk offers a change of scenery, a chance to think, reduced stress and some time alone or fun with other walking enthusiasts. Get up to speed about the physical and mental benefits of walking.
