Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas Collects Cell Phones for Haiti Relief

January 27, 2010

Richardson, TX — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) employees are collecting old cell phones as part of a recycling drive to support relief efforts in Haiti. Phones are being collected January 26 – 29 from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. In addition to our headquarters offices in Richardson, Texas, donation tables will also be available at our other Texas locations, including: Abilene, Marshall, San Angelo, Waco, Wichita Falls, Houston, El Paso, Austin, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas employees are very active in their communities, volunteering for and supporting literally hundreds of causes throughout the state. "This drive is an example of our employees' spirit of generosity and desire to help those in need," said Darren Rodgers, president, BCBSTX. "We are pleased to have implemented this recycling drive in addition to our employee drive to raise funds for contributions to Doctors Without Borders (an international medical humanitarian organization that delivers aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care)."

There are an estimated 130 million phones retired in the United States every year. If even a small percentage of them are donated to 'Phones for Haiti,' it would contribute millions of dollars towards relief from the devastating earthquake.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas — the only statewide, customer-owned health insurer in Texas — is the largest provider of health benefits in the state, working with nearly 40,000 physicians and 400 hospitals to serve over 4.5 million members in all 254 counties. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is a Division of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the country’s largest customer-owned health insurer and fourth largest health insurer overall. HCSC is a Mutual Legal Reserve Company and an Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
