Richardson, TX — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) announced today that employees at its Abilene facility have raised a total of $5,692 which they will contribute to two local charities — Big Brothers Big Sisters and Medical Care Mission of Abilene. In addition, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas has provided matching funds for employee volunteer hours, bringing the total donation to the two organizations to $7,962.

The contributions are part of the health insurer’s Blue Corps program, which encourages employees to volunteer to serve the communities where they live, work and do business. Blue Cross matches its employees’ volunteer hours with a corporate donation. In addition, employees generously contribute their own funds through the company’s annual "Caring Campaign."

Since 1983, Medical Care Mission has met the health care needs of the working poor in a 22-county region, providing high quality medical care for over 35,000 people who cannot afford health care. Funds donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters will support its mission of enriching and empowering children to reach their highest potential through safe, positive, one-to-one mentoring relationships.

"The employees at our Abilene facility do an excellent job of showing their support for our community," says Dee Moore, vice president of BCBSTX’s Abilene claims and customer service center. "We have made a commitment to being good corporate citizens by giving to worthy causes that truly make a difference in our community."

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas — the only statewide, customer-owned health insurer in Texas — is the largest provider of health benefits in the state, working with nearly 40,000 physicians and 400 hospitals to serve 4 million members in all 254 counties. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is a Division of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the country's largest customer-owned health insurer and fourth largest health insurer overall. HCSC is a Mutual Legal Reserve Company and an Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
